Does anyone know what teams and how many times (under the old CWS format) that a team was eliminated with one loss? An example is: ASU goes all the way thru the winners bracket and loses to USC (from the losers bracket) in the final game. This happened once for sure and I think twice.

Not 100% sure, but in 1998 ASU might have been the only team that this happened to. I know they changed it a couple of years prior for television purposes. All the games were on ESPN and then the championship game was on Saturday. The last thing CBS wanted was for the 0 loss team to lose and then have to show a second "championship game" with 2 teams with 1 loss so they changed it to a winner take all for that game. This has now been changed to a championship series.

I just looked and I'm pretty sure that UGA beat a no loss Oklahoma State in 1990 for the national title. We lost our one game to Stanford and then went through the bracket and beat OK State for the title. Maybe our OK State friend could tell us if that was the Cowboys only loss in the 1990 CWS.

To tell you the truth...Because that single Championship Game has been changed to a Championship series, they should return to the original set-up and play the entire tourney in double elimination form. They have attempted to arrange the regionals and supers to mimic, World Series play. The BIG dfference...there's a week lay-off between the regionals and supers. Teams that don't have a great deal of pitching depth can make it to Omaha, by eliminating teams who would fare far better in the CWS than the winning teams would/do.

And yes we only had one loss going into the championship game that year.

1991 both LSU and Wichita State had no losses going into the Championship game. 1993 Wichita State had zero losses and LSU had one going into the Championship game. On a good note, a one loss Wichita State beat a no loss Texas team for the 1989 College World Series Championship.
So it was a good idea thru 1989 to play a single championship game, but then it should have been changed starting in 1991. lol

Question for the ASU fans.....
USC (that's South Carolina or USCe for those of us from the SouthEast) played Arizona State for the CWS Title one time. The year was 1977......
Name the ASU player that went on to be a bigtime 3rd baseman for the ATL Braves. (Hint, he was teammates with Dale Murphy during the Braves bad years....)

Here's one for the Wichita State fans.
In 2004, Wichita State took on Arkansas in the Regional Finals, Name the pitcher that threw around 3 innings in game 1, and came back and was the starting pitcher for game 2.

He's seen at Packard Stadium every now and then.
